Flavors For Life GASTRONOMIC AFFAIR 2019
Flavors For Life is a Gastronomic Affair where renown Las Vegas chefs are invited to create a healthy recipe to be approved by the organizations’ nutritionists by meeting strict nutritional guidelines. After the recipe is approved each chef is able to sample its recipe to everybody the day of the event.
This year’s event brought 23 chefs from multicultural cuisines to showcase their culinary talents and compete among each other. In between them, we had chef Geno Bernardo from The Summit Club, chef Alessandra Madeira from Blume, Chef Jainine Jaffer from Shiraz, Chef Donald Lemperle, form Vegenation, and many more. Each attendee, besides enjoying delicious and healthy recipes, wine, and music, they receive two tickets to vote for their top two most delicious recipes. More than 400 votes were counted from all chefs’ buckets. This year’s runner up was chef Gavin Crum from Cut and Taste with his delicious Beef Tataki, and the winner was chef Leticia Mitchell, from Leticia’s Cocina, with her delicious Sopa Poblana, (Poblano Soup).
Flavors For Life Gastronomic Affair also raises funds to support its Next-Gen Culinary Program.
This program focuses on high school students currently enrolled in culinary classes. It is designed to enhance their current curriculum by providing access to workshops increasing their knowledge, skills and motivation to create heart- healthy recipes during their culinary professional career.
Clark County School District culinary students go through five workshops to learn how to cook and eat healthy. They learn about vitamins. Minerals, sodium, hypertension, added sugars, diabetes, fats, cholesterol, portion control and how to read nutritional labels. At the end of the program students participate in a culinary competition. The top team and the top student winners get to participate showcasing their recipes at the Gastronomic Affair. Nine high schools with 21 teams competed this year, the top team was from Northwest Career and Technical Academy HS and the top student from East career and Technical Academy HS.
